Lwakataka to be flaged off as No.1

Former national champion Ponsiano Lwakataka will bear the burden of opening the way in the KCB Pearl of Africa Uganda Rally this weekend.

According to Clerk of course Stephen Byaruhanga explained that Lwakataka will be flagged off first because he leads the national championship.

“We are guided by the rules and that’s what is stated. Lwakataka will certainly drive car No.1,” Byaruhanga said.

The 2008 national champion will be pursued by African champion Jamie Whyte of Zimbabwe who also leads the 2010 continental championship.

Jas Mangat is fifth while 1999 African champion Charles Muhangi, returning to action after a two-year sabbatical, is sixth.

The rally will start with a super special stage at Lubiri racing circuit in Kampala on Friday.

COCA Cola has offered sh25m to the KCB Pearl of Africa rally organisers with sh3m to support drivers Posiano Lwakataka and Suzan Muwonge.
The rally is scheduled for April 30.

Coca Cola managing director Basil Gadzios unveiled the package in the presence of Federation of Motor Sport Uganda (FMU) as he commended the body of its efforts to build a big fan base.

“We are excited to partner with FMU and we look forward to having an exciting event,” Gadzios said.

FMU President George Kagimu commended Coca Cola for the timely support and appealed for continuous assistance.

The event, starting in Lubiri with a super Special stage, has 223km competitive sections divided into six sub-sections.

The shortest competitive route has 4.4km while the longest section has 16.9 km and the first six sections.

Meanwhile, local competitors have been spared the cost of purchasing HANS devices.

As a safety measure, it is recommended that competitors wear Head and Neck Support (HANS) devices which cost at least $1200 (sh2.4m) per crew but world Motorsport governing body, FIA has waived the requirement in Africa this year.

For now, it is only those crews registered to score Africa championship points that must wear HANS devices,”MU vice president Kisitu Mayanja stated.

The period of grace is only one season, next year all competitors in Africa championship events will be required to wear the devices for their own safety.”

Come Rain, come Sunshine, POAUR will Rollon
KCB Pearl of Africa Rally Clerk of the Course, Steven Byaruhanga has downplayed concerns that wet weather conditions would disrupt the continental event due in Uganda from April 30 to May 2.

Steven said, while designing the route for the event he picked on roads that can withstand wet weather conditions.

This year's Pearl Rally, which also acts as the third round of the African Rally Championship (ARC) series, flags off with super special stage at Lubiri double circuit track before heading into competitive sections covering parts of Luweero district.

But in case of extreme circumstances, I have designed an alternative route so there shouldn’t be any such worries,” he assured.

Organizers of the KCB Safari Rally in Kenya were forced to cancel out the Super Special Stage after the venue (Jamhuri Park) got flooded following a heavy downpour in Nairobi

Top foreign drivers are expected from Kenya, Tanzania, Zimbabwe, South Africa, Rwanda and Burundi.

The rally route will be open to local drivers for reccing on April 23. Byaruhanga has said the media will go along the local drivers into the route on the same day. We want the media to see what drivers and organizers go through during the rally so that they can help us in educating our fans based on the experience,” Byaruhanga.

Local motorsport body, FMU, has put particular emphasis on safety following ugly incidents in the past resulting either from failure to control fans or drivers ignoring some precautions. It is in that stead that Pearl rally organizers are employing numerous measures including use of GPS and other related tracking devices to monitor drivers while in the route.
