Muhangi started rallying in 1996 with a Mitsubishi Evo 2. He didn't complete the rally but having been flagged off as car 31 he reached masaka as car no.6. That is when people started noticing him. He ended the day in Mbarara laying as car 5. He retired on day 2, with a fuel pump problem.
He later up graded to an Evo3 "Yellow Bird" winning some races, most important was the Rwanda rally.
In 1998 the famous "Kitaguriro" Subaru was at work arriving on the eve of a rally Shell 1998. This was on of the most competitive rally ending up as no.2. The same year, he won the National Rally Championship beating a field of all the top guns of the day (Karim,kato,chipper,etc). In 1999, he embarked on the ARC which he won confortably.This earned him and his co-driver Steven Byaruhanga, the Sportsman of the year award (1999). |
